Infra-Com System
The Infra-Com system utilises invisible infra-red light to provide two way digital voice communications for mobile operators and crew. Two versions are available: either the NATO codified military system or the industrial version. Both options have similar performance but are designed to meet different specifications and standards. The advanced digital infra-red system has significant advantages over other media. The noisy electrical environment in most modern ships causes significant interference to radio or traditional inductive loop systems. The digital infra-red systems are not susceptible to the levels of radiated or induced noise found in machinery spaces, engine rooms, control centres and switch rooms.
The infra-red systems allow crystal clear two way voice communications in all locations. The system has the advantage of full duplex speech between the ship's communication system and the mobile user. The multi-channel capability, while still maintaining full duplex speech, allows individual mobile users to have independent communications within the same area. Users can be provided with noise attenuating headsets when working in machinery spaces or other areas where high noise levels exist. Alternatively, single sided or ultra light weight headsets are available. In all instances headsets employ noise cancelling microphones for the reduction of background noise. The side tone on all systems is generated within the base station and, therefore ensures total confidence in the operation of the complete system.
